Don't try to wear comfortable shoes, just make it a point to have comfortable shoes that are well broken in, that you can stand or walk in for hours on end.OK, excuse my Schrödinger's Cat post about DEF CON being canceled or not, it's one of the oldest running jokes about the conference, and as a long-time attendee, it's one of the most harmless jokes you can pull on new attendees. just have a rough idea and then let fate intervene now and then. but especially if it's you're first time - defcon is a buffet with way more than you'll ever be able to consume, or even sample. and maybe that's best for some people, sometimes. just try not to get stuck doing one thing the whole time. if something awesome comes up, or you're super digging what you're doing, be willing to let stuff slide - or join something new you hadn't planned on. then once things start, be very fluid with your plans. download the hacker tracker app and use it to help plan. and try to get some kind of game plan about the things you really want to do and/or check out. My best piece of advice is look through the guide when you get it (rtfm), and also look around at other sites, listen to other people, etc. maybe just bring out the kinky footwear for special occasions/parties. it's cool to look cool, but it's not nearly as cool when you're halfway through the first night and you can hardly walk, then you're limping around missing stuff the rest of the con. A lot of folks were just excited to be around people like them.Īgree with the footwear. I will say that I saw more curious and happy faces my first time. The organizers really want everyone to have a great time and take any kind of misconduct pretty seriously. If someone is making you uncomfortable, please tell someone.For those of us who aren’t out as much these days, it helps to have folks to check in with throughout the following weeks. I have made friends from conferences from many different places. Chances are you are working towards similar goals or have similar interests. ![]() if you feel comfortable, network with folks.Remember: There is so much at defcon that you can’t see it all. Pay attention to the defcon recon posts and map out your plans of things you’d like to see.I have walked up to 67 miles during the con. I just wanted to share some tips and encourage any other veterans to share advice on having a good time.
